Every bride is unique | The Boston Globe 2016

As the owner of Your Dream Bridal, Malinda Macari provides the intimate shopping experience she found lacking when helping friends find their wedding gowns. Brides enjoy Macari’s undivided attention while trying on dresses (typically $1,500 to $3,000) from US, Canadian, and fair-trade designers with the full-service, appointment-only boutique all to themselves. She will celebrate her one-year anniversary in business next month.

Q. Is there such a thing as a typical bride?

A. Women come in all shapes, ages, and sizes. For that reason, I go up to size 20 in a lot of different styles. There are quite a few “encore” brides who have a clear sense of their style and don’t want to copy what they did last time. I’m a second-time bride myself, so I totally get wanting to make it right. Simply put, my job is to help find the gown that makes you feel your most confident and beautiful on your wedding day, which is unique for each and every woman.

Q. What can a bride expect during her 90-minute appointment?

A. I ask questions about her venue and budget, and I request a link to her Pinterest page to understand her style so I can preselect a few gowns before she arrives. We listen to the music she likes, and we all have a good time. I listen to everyone’s opinion, but I’m on her side.

Q. As far as entourages go, how many is too many?

A. It’s about who you bring, not the number of people, in the sense of who knows you best and who will be honest without pushing their wishes on you — because that happens. Also, it’s difficult to make a decision if the party who is purchasing the dress isn’t here. As for numbers, I’d say three is great, five if you have to, and anything above that can get crazy. Lots of brides come alone, which is fun because then there are no rules.
Q. What’s your advice to brides caught in the middle?

A. Brides who want to make everybody happy have to stop listening to their heads and start listening to their hearts. Trust me, when you walk down that aisle and your partner sees how beautiful and happy you are, they’ll just melt.
