The start of November always makes me excited as with the change of the season brings the Christmas lights, holiday music, pie (Yum!), and family gatherings! This year with my son learning to talk and really walking (well running!) around, it makes this holiday season even more magical. But I at times feel helpless and guilty because as my son has a warm bed, his parents, his health and his home, so many children have gone through the dangerous and torturous border crossing, detention and asylum-seeking protocols- they are lacking the support, love, and kindness they need and deserve.
I was the firstborn in this country, my parents immigrated when they were younger with my grandparents, my grandfather actually has a letter from JFK’s office about his request to come to the US. And it makes me heartsick to know that so many families who are trying to find a better life from threat and possible death are being treated so inhumanely.
This holiday season my wish is that every child is with their loved ones, in a warm bed, healthy and happy.
