Top Tips To Find the Perfect Makeup Artist
You’ve found the right partner, the venue and the dress, now for the final touches! Investing in a makeup artist is a must-do for many brides today when you consider your wedding day will be the most photographed day of your life. However, finding the right makeup artist is imperative. At Your Dream Bridal, we’ve learned a lot from our many brides and wanted to share our experience and tips to help you find the best makeup artist and look for your wedding day.
Start with what you know. Attend a wedding where the bride has enviable makeup? Ask her who her artist was. Even if you aren’t engaged yet, it is always best to be prepared and seeing someone’s work in person is the clearest indicator of makeup artistry you will love. Remember all those pins and magazines of gowns you loved? Go back to them and focus on the makeup on each bride and start collecting faces that represent elements of what you want, overall look, eyes or lips.
Referrals, Referrals, Referrals. Your wedding team is a wealth of knowledge about local makeup artists. Other brides are a great resource too, but your wedding planner, photographer and hair stylist are also great people to ask for referrals. If you are getting married locally in Boston, I will be happy to discuss makeup artists I know with you too!
Personality. Find someone you like! If you don’t click, then working together to create the perfect look will become stressful instead of beautiful. Remember this person will be with you on the morning of your wedding day, and perhaps the rehearsal dinner too, you want them to be a positive presence during those getting ready butterflies-in-my-tummy moments. During your trial application, you will see whether they are open to your inputs and truly listen to what you want or have a vision all their own. You want a makeup artist that will be confident in their skills, but also open to listening, ensuring the result is perfect for you.
Responsible and Responsive. The morning of your wedding will be exciting and intense. Worrying about your makeup artist being on time and bringing all the proper equipment and materials is not something you should spend brain power on. Pay attention when you are communicating about the interview and trial makeup appointments. Are they prompt in getting back to you, easy to communicate with and on-time for your meetings? Then you have found someone you can rely on.
Be Yourself. Your wedding day is probably not the best day to try out the latest trend in lip color. When your grandchildren ask to see your wedding pictures, you don’t want to regret a very bold makeup choice. If you have a date night look that you love, share that with your artist and ask how you can enhance it for your wedding day. If you don’t usually wear much makeup, ask your artist what features they think should be highlighted and let their expertise take the lead.
Lastly, make sure they always use disposable applicators. A professional makeup artist will always make cleanliness a top priority! Above all else, a makeup artist should make you feel calm and beautiful, helping to enhance your natural glow when you say “I Do”.
